USA Student Visa (F-1) for Indian Students
Quick answer: To study in the USA, Indian students need an I-20 from a SEVP-certified school, payment of the SEVIS fee, a completed DS-160, proof of funds, and a successful F-1 visa interview at a US consulate. Graduates can work on Optional Practical Training (OPT) for 12 months, with a 24-month STEM extension for eligible degrees.
The F-1 Student Visa is the most common visa type for international students wishing to pursue academic studies at an accredited U.S. college, university, seminary, conservatory, academic high school, or language training program. It allows students to live and study in the United States for the duration of their academic program.
To be eligible for an F-1 visa, applicants must be enrolled in a full-time academic program at a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified institution, demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses, and show strong ties to their home country to confirm their intent to return after completing studies.
The application process involves obtaining an acceptance letter from a U.S. institution, paying the SEVIS fee, completing the DS-160 online application form, paying the visa application fee, and attending an interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Processing times can vary by country, so applicants should apply well in advance.
F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during official school breaks. After graduation, students may apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) to gain up to 12 months of work experience in their field of study, with STEM graduates eligible for a 24-month extension.
